Tuesday Evening Summer Rides
From Tuesday 28 March 2017, we switch to the summer schedule for Tuesday evening. Tuesday’s summer rides leave from The Winchester Hotel at 6:30pm. There are three rides: A, B and C. LIGHTS REQUIRED.
The A ride will be a fast training ride. As usual, the focus is on a smooth, safe ride, concentrating on working hard and maintaining good riding form. Riders are required to be entirely self sufficient, although ‘pairing up’ is required for U18s. We will, in general, not stop for mechanicals or dropped riders. We will ride through-and-off where the roads permit. Average speeds expected to be 21-22mph. Attacking riding is permitted on the ‘Col de Kingsworthy’ and we will have a brief regroup at the King Charles pub in Kings Worthy, before spinning home.
The A ride route is: Alresford – Spiers Lane – Northington – East Stratton – Micheldever
B and C rides follow a variety of routes that are shown in the table below. Neither has a designated leader responsible for the ride. The B ride speed averages 18-20 mph. B rides, although a slower pace, follow the same rules as the A ride. Riders are required to be entirely self sufficient as the ride will not necessarily stop for mechanicals or dropped riders. The B ride will also ride through-and-off where the roads permit. C rides are 15-16 mph. These are the US Navy SEALs of the Venta world – “No man (or woman) is left behind”. It’s the more inclusive Tuesday ride and etiquette dictates that the group stops and waits for minor mechanicals. Obviously if somebody is on their fourth puncture then they may decide to fall on their own sword. Groups should also reform when splits appear. On C rides all members ride to the speed and ability of the group not their personal desire. However, because of the smaller numbers of C riders on a Tuesday night, there’s a chance you may be riding on your own so be prepared for this happening.
Post ride pub training
Finally, we all like cycling and it appears many of us like pubs too so we’d like to combine these hobbies after the rides on Tuesdays when weather permits. The Queen Inn just behind the college in Kingsgate Rd is central and also has a big garden for sweaty cyclists with heaters and lots of space where you can keep bikes safe, it would be great if those who fancy a drink could head here to talk of derring dos.
