The Club’s monthly gravel ride was a welcome contrast from the previous trip to the New Forest. Full sun Easter weather – yes, really – replaced the howling wind and rain on a biblical scale that was served up on our previous visit in January.
A group of eight set off from Brockishill Green Car Park and quickly abandoned asphalt for the flint trails that make riding in the New Forest a gravel must.
The route, designed by Paul O’Halloran, was just over 50km with about 500m of climbing. With over 80% of the ride taking place on defined gravel cycle routes the ride is ideal for anyone wanting to experience the stunning beauty and ever-changing environs of the New Forest.
The New Forest, which is located no more than 30 minutes-drive from Winchester, is a Gravel Mecca. The vast tracts of ancient oak, native broadleaf woodlands and coniferous plantations, punctuated by heather, bracken and gorse heathland on high ground and verdant river valleys makes a ride an absolute must. It’s on our doorstep and the majority of the rides are car-free – what’s not to like about that!
Thanks to Paul for plotting a truly epic ride in the New Forest (route link provided below and is a must ride). Thanks also to Yana, Dave, Tom, Andy, Steve and Keith for joining the ride and their excellent company.
