October closed off this year’s Segment of the Month (SoTM) competition with a fast and relatively short local climb up Chilbolton Avenue close to Winchester city.

In the women’s competition, Annie Dixey took the top place on the podium with a quick time of 02:16. Very close behind in second place was Franie Ng with a time of 02:24. These two consistent riders were the only two participants to ride over this month’s segment in the women’s competition.

In the men’s competition, Oscar Hoult came out of nowhere to smash a fantastic and untouchable first place time of 01:47. Some distance behind, Dave Morris took second place with a time of 1:55 and Michael Wise closed out the podium in third place, close behind Dave with a time of 02:01.

So at the end of this year’s contest, in the women’s GC competition, Annie Dixey is the winner, sitting atop the women’s GC table with an impressive haul of 145 points. Franie Ng takes the second step in this year’s women’s GC competition, quite close behind on 138 points. Last year’s winner in the women’s GC competition Vanda Kyselicova closes out this year’s podium in third place with 104 points.

In the Men’s GC competition, things at the end of this year’s contest could not have been closer. Both Dave Morris and Michel Wise ended the year on 120 points. However, in this particular battle of age-versus-youth, count-back shows that although Dave has accrued his points through consistent top 5 positions, Michael has performed better, with four ‘wins’ in the bag in April, June, August and September; youth proving to be the (inevitable?) victor.

So at the end of this year’s contest, in the men’s GC competition, Michael Wise is the winner with Dave Morris claiming second place accordingly. Matt Gilmour and Martin Evans also ended up tied at year-end on 61 points apiece, however a similar count-back process has shown Matt to have had more wins than Martin, so he is able to close out this year’s men’s competition podium in third place.

A hearty congratulations to both Annie and Michael who not only claim the kudos of being the respective women’s and men’s VC Venta 2022 SoTM competition champions; but also get to claim a prize that has been generously donated by our own Neil Wyatt, from the South Downs Social (Handmade Cyclist) who very kindly sponsored the entire competition for this year.

Thank you to all the riders who participated in this year’s competition, that’s it for 2022 – see in you in 2023.
